Gators Add Assistant Coach, Tab Jones for Job

CHELSEA -- If you noticed an unfamiliar face on the Gators' bench during their 73-54 win over the Baruch Blue Devils on Tuesday, you weren't alone. It was the debut for assistant coach Dan Jones, who joined the team for practice on Monday. Head Coach Ben Newman and the Gators had played their first five games without an assistant, and it appears Coach Jones will be a valuable addition to the LMU bench going forward.

Jones is no stranger to PSAL basketball, as he joins the Gators with coaching experience at two New York City high schools, in addition to working as the first athletic director in the history of South Bronx Preparatory High School. Jones has served on the coaching staffs at Chelsea Career and Technical Education, and the High School of American Studies at Lehman College.

The Gators were left with a vacancy at the position after Jesse Johnson did not return following the 2016-17 season. The experienced history teacher at the Museum School had begun to miss games last season when LMU alumni Kalil Sherrod was brought on as an assistant in January, but Sherrod did not return as well. Sherrod currently plays for Coach Don Silveri at Villa Maria College in Buffalo, NY.
